GEMARI.ID-JAKARTA. We have seen, watched, and heard from various media outlets, especially television, that large-scale demonstrations have recently taken place in various regions across Indonesia, particularly in Jakarta and several major cities, such as Surabaya, Makassar, Mataram, and other cities. The demonstrations carried out by university students and the public, demanded that the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) not increase allowances for its members, and some even called for the DPR to be dissolved.
Commenting on this incident, Prof Dr Budi Supriyanto, MM, MSi, a professor at Satyagama University, expressed his views in an interview with the gemari.id team a few days ago. "I think the people's demands are very realistic, because the current DPR RI members seem arrogant. They don't prioritize the people, only themselves," he said, "even though the people are currently very poor and neglected, they seem to have no concern for or sympathy for the people. This is what makes me personally view the DPR RI's arrogance as extremely excessive." Saturday (August 30, 2025).
As a professor of Government Science, he appealed to the leaders and members of the House of Representatives (DPR) to exercise restraint. "Look, the current social conditions are not good. I hope the DPR will exercise restraint so as not to provoke large demonstrations everywhere. Don't demand salaries or allowances; just demand reasonable ones, so that the public doesn't get angry. The public's anger is now being vented on the DPR," he said.
He then suggested regarding allowances for DPR members: "If it's an allowance, go ahead, but don't increase it. If necessary, reduce it, or just keep it reasonable. Furthermore, the housing allowance of 50 million rupiah per month is too high, while some people can't afford to eat, many are poor. Therefore, I implore DPR members to prioritize themselves and avoid angering the public," he advised.
As an academic, Prof. Budi also appealed to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, "To my beloved President Prabowo Subianto, I hope you can control the DPR members in parliament so that it doesn't cause unrest." "As a national leader, Mr. Prabowo must be firm and urge members of the Indonesian House of Representatives to be more prudent and not demand exorbitant allowances. "Our economy is not doing well right now, and many of our people are still poor," he explained.
Not only that, to the demonstrators and the wider community, Prof. Budi invited more patience, now your demands have begun to be considered by the government, the public should not go too far, but if you hold a demonstration, please do so, it is a democratic right for our people, demonstrations are allowed but do not damage state facilities, because they belong to the nation and state and the funds come from the people, he concluded. @mulyono_dp
